IDFC Bank IFSC code

IFSC or Indian Financial System Code is a bank branch identification system developed by the RBI for usage in national payment clearance protocols. When money is transferred through platforms like the Immediate Payment System (IMPS), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT), there are multiple banks and bank accounts involved and this ensures that payment processing is conducted seamlessly. The practical use of this code is seen when one undertakes an electronic fund transfer on any of the previously mentioned platforms. It is herein necessary to provide details of the beneficiary account like the recipient’s bank account number and the IFSC of the branch where his account is located.

The code is in the form of a 11-character alphanumeric which reveals various details upon inspection. For example, in the IFSC for IDFC’s Fort Mumbai branch, IDFB0040106, the first four characters ‘IDFB’ are short for the name of the bank which the branch in question is a part of. This part is common to all of IDFC’s IFS codes. This is followed by a zero and then a six-digit unique branch code that points out the Fort Mumbai branch of IDFC from among a pool of more than 100 branches.
