The bank as part of its daily business conducts electronic transfers for its customers from their account to another account even when the recipient account is that of another bank. This is made possible through the various payment settlement platforms like the Immediate Payment System (IMPS), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT). These protocols being common across all banks, identify all the accounts involved through a unique system of identification known as Indian Financial System Code or IFSC. This unique code is allocated to each and every branch in the country. Its importance can be understood from the fact that when someone wishes to conduct an electronic transfer, the primary requirement is the provision of both the beneficiary account number as well as the IFSC of his/her parent branch.
