IOB IFSC Code (Indian Overseas Bank IFSC Code)

IOB IFSC code

The Indian Overseas Bank participates in national payment clearance platforms like the Immediate Payment System (IMPS), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Fund (NEFT). As part of these payment protocols, the banks are assigned a unique identification code for each if its branch operating in the country. This code is known as the Indian Financial System Code or IFSC code as it is commonly known. Any transaction conducted through the aforementioned payment platforms requires the remitter to provide not only the recipient’s account number but also the IFSC code of the bank branch where he opened his account. This code is available either on the bank-issued passbook or on the banks official website. This code ensures that money is routed to the right account by pinpointing the branch where it is registered. It also is used by the Reserve Bank of India, the operator of the payment platforms to keep surveillance over the electronic transactions in the country.

The code is alphanumeric and is composed of 11-characters. The first four characters indicate the bank which the branch in question is a part of. The next character is a zero which is present as a contingency. The final six characters form the unique branch code that indicates the required branch from among several others.
