The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) which is the governing and regulatory body for the banking sector in India operates various payment settlement platforms at the national level to facilitate electronic transfer of funds in the country between bank accounts of all participating branches. These platforms are namely the Immediate Payment System (IMPS), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT). While all of them perform essentially the same function of fund transfer, they follow different protocols. However, all of them require the IFSC code for their functioning. IFSC or Indian Financial System Code is a unique identification code assigned to all participating bank branches by the RBI for the purpose of their identification in any of the above payment protocols. In any typical transfer when both the account number and IFSC are entered, the IFSC narrows down the branch where the beneficiary account is registered and the account number then from among that pool pinpoints the requisite bank account where the funds are intended to be deposited. This two-level check ensures the money does not end up in the wrong account due to any error in data entry, processing etc. The code also plays a vital role in the maintenance and regulatory functions of the Reserve Bank of India.
