Citibank IFSC code

As part of its banking services, Citibank India provides its customers with the facility of conducting electronic transfer of funds to other bank accounts. This facility is provided by participation in various national payment settlement protocols like Immediate Payment System (IMPS), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT). All participating bank branches of these systems are allocated a unique 11-character identification code known as the Indian Financial System Code or IFSC Code as it is commonly known by the banking regulatory body Reserve Bank of India (RBI) which operates these settlement platforms. The importance of this code becomes apparent with the fact that any electronic transfer of funds requires one to provide not only the beneficiary’s unique account number but also the unique IFSC code of his bank branch where his account is registered. This code is required to ensure that the money being transferred electronically is sent through a process that occurs seamlessly and without error. The IFSC code further enables the Reserve Bank of India to monitor all electronic transactions occurring in the country in order to fulfill its regulatory functions.

These codes follow a certain format in their structure. The 11-character alphanumeric code can be divided into three parts. The first part comprising of four alphabets is indicative of the name of the bank. The second part is a ‘0’ that is reserved for any future use. The final part is the six digit unique branch code that pinpoints the branch in question among several others of the same bank.
