Central Bank of India

The Central Bank of India holds the distinction of being one of the largest and oldest commercial banking establishments in India. Established in 1911 by Parsi banker Sorabji Pochkhanawala, the banks prides itself on being the first bank to be owned and operated by Indians. The bank was responsible for the creation of the first exchange bank of India, the Central Exchange Bank of India in London in the year 1936 which was subsequently acquired by the British banking firm Barclays. The bank was later nationalized like a host of other banks of the era. The bank is presently based out of Mumbai, the financial capital of India. It has only grown its operations in India since its inception with close to 4,730 branches and 5,319 ATM’s in operation across 27 states and union territories. The bank as of latest news is also one of the 20 banks in the public sector to have been assured of recapitalization by the government over the next two years. The bank today holds reserves and surplus to the sum of INR 28,303 crores and has a total business volume of approximately INR 4,50,539 crores. The bank in addition to its domestic operations has established offices in Nairobi, Hong Kong, Zambia and Kenya. It has also, subject to RBI approval, in the process of opening offices in five additional locations like Singapore, Doha, Dubai and London.
