Allahabad Bank

Allahabad Bank is a renowned nationalized bank with operations in the banking and financial services sector in India. The bank holds the unique distinction of being the oldest joint stock bank in India. Established by a group if European traders in Allahabad, the bank quickly spread its operations to states like Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Calcutta and Delhi. It was then acquired by the P&O Banking Corporation in the beginning of the 20th century which was then acquired by the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. However, the bank continued to operate as a separate entity throughout this period. In a final change of ownership, the bank was taken over by the government of India in the year 1969 along with 13 other banks. As of today, the bank operates a network of over 2,500 branches all over the country from its headquarters in the city of Kolkata. The bank also has an international presence with offices in financial centers like Hong Kong and Shenzen. The bank offers services like consumer banking, corporate banking and insurance and also provides merchant banking services through subsidiaries like AllBank Finance Ltd. The bank has a total asset value of about INR 2,36,460 crores or USD 37 billion. It also has been placed on the Forbes Global 2000 list of biggest companies in the world. It is also listed on the prominent stock exchanges in the country like the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE). While a majority of the bank is held by the government of India, the rest of the bank’s equity is held primarily by institutional investors in India and abroad.
